10-Step Game Plan for Job Searches

  1. Obtain personal input and feedback from close colleagues regarding how they think about you and what you do well.
  2. Explore what “next moves” could make sense for you. Get ideas from colleagues and obtain feedback on your early ideas.
  3. Craft a compelling, succinct, well positioned resume ( 1 to 2 ½ pages) with meaningful and ideally quantified accomplishments.
  4. Update your Linked-In profile and notify your social networks of your job search.
  5. Start a targeted and aggressive networking campaign (phone and face to face) with those you know…and join a local executives networking group.
  6. Develop a target list of companies you would like to work for and search firm consultants and research associates.
  7. Distribute your resume via email with a short and appropriate cover note (1/2 to ¾ page)
  8. Polish interviewing skills
  9. Pre-test your references either through an early job consideration or an executive coach.
  10. Do not feel that you have to accept the first job that comes your way. This is a valuable opportunity to look at several opportunities
